The Salmon and the Journey of Return

Salmon are defined as anadromous fish—creatures that, after spending years in the vastness of the ocean, instinctively swim upstream to return to the very place of their origin.

Each year, thousands upon thousands of salmon—having reached full maturity, accumulated full body mass, and endured the open sea—begin the long and dangerous journey home.

You, like the salmon, are programmed by God to swim upward.

Not backward.
Not sideways.
But upward—against resistance, current, and threat—to return to your origin.

Created by the Word, for the Word : Identity, Purpose, and God’s Calling for Men

God creates all things by the power of His Word.

By His Word He formed the universe—and by that same Word He formed the human person: your body, your mind, your heart, your soul.

Through His Word, God thought you, willed you, and spoke you into existence for a particular purpose:
to be a manifestation of His glory in the world and to attain your ultimate destiny—full communion and eternal union with Him.

This is the foundation of purpose and identity in Christ.

Before God sealed you for delivery into this world, He whispered His Word into you.
That Word is sealed within you—hardwired, programmed, indelible.

This Word is your origin and your destination.
It is the divine blueprint of God’s calling for men.

Vocation: Hearing God’s Voice

The word vocation comes from the Latin vox, meaning “voice.”

Vocation is not merely employment, achievement, or social status.
It is the Voice of God calling a man into his true identity. This Vox defines:

• your identity and calling
• your mission as a Catholic husband and father
• your call to greatness by assuming your spiritual leadership

God’s voice may haunt you, but it will never abandon you.
It pursues you even when you attempt to outrun it.

The Holy Summons: A Sacred Whisper

The Word whispers in the soul.

It speaks quietly of your mission and your call to glory.
It is subtle, gentle, easily crowded out by:

• noise
• responsibility
• distraction
• false urgency
• unneeded needs

God’s Word, though omnipotent, does not coerce or overpower your freedom.
This is why discerning God’s will requires you to be determined to enter the silence.

As Scripture reminds us in 1 Kings 19:11–13, God is not found in the wind, earthquake, or fire—but in the still, small voice.

The Word that exists outside of you speaks from within you—
if only you will stop, turn, and listen.

Spiritual Warfare and the Attack on a Man’s Vocation

From the moment of your conception to this very day, the Word continues to whisper His Voice into your soul.

And the primary place you will hear it is within your vocation.

That is precisely where the enemy positions himself.

Just as salmon become vulnerable during their upstream migration, men become targets when they pursue their calling. This is not coincidence—it is spiritual warfare.

The enemy’s strategy is simple:

• intimidate you
• instill doubt
• amplify insecurity
• encourage withdrawal or passivity

Why?

Because if you abandon your vocation, you lose your ability to hear the Vox.
And when a man cannot hear God’s voice, he cannot lead his family toward its destiny.

Why Men Struggle with Prayer, Silence, and Spiritual Discipline

One of the greatest crises facing men today is not lack of strength—but lack of spiritual discipline for men.

We no longer make time for God.

Schedules are saturated.
Silence is avoided.
Prayer is postponed.

The result is predictable:

• weakened spiritual authority
• fractured families
• diminished leadership
• unfulfilled lives

Men who do not listen to God cannot change the world, live fulfilled lives, or win souls.

Reclaiming Your Spiritual Leadership by reclaiming Your Prayer Life 

Over the next week, make a non-negotiable commitment:

Carve out sacred time for God—every day.

• Same time
• Same place
• No excuses

Do not wait until you “feel spiritual.”
Do not outsource this responsibility.

Your vocation depends on it.
Your family depends on it.
Your destiny depends on it.

The salmon does not ask if the journey is convenient.
He swims upstream—because something within him knows where home is.
