Powerless to Powerful

St. Joseph was greeted by the angel of the Lord with the title “Joseph Son of David.”
This title is rich with significance for it connotes kingship. Joseph, whose blood was of royal stock, was the descendent of a long list of Jewish monarchs, and therefore heir to David’s
throne. Joseph was a king, yet a secret, hidden, unknown king.

To be an heir to the throne of David, while living under the occupation of the Romans who hailed Caesar as not only king, but divine, would certainly make one an enemy of the Roman authorities.
One who claimed to be king was a rival to Caesar, and therefore would be hunted and sentenced to death. It was imperative that Joseph’s kingship remain hidden to ensure that eventually Christ the King would be revealed.

Joseph, Son of David, the hidden king, transmitted kingship to the King of Kings, the Son of David, Jesus, who when revealed as king was crucified for it.
Joseph’s hidden kingship was revealed by the kingship of His Son.
Though Joseph was a king because of David, his “father,” he ultimately is king because of Christ the King, his Son.

Because of your baptism, and Christ living in you, you, like Joseph, are a secret, underground king.
You are called to transfer the kingship, power, and the dominion of God to your child.
But as with Joseph, the ruler of this world, Satan, seeks to destroy the secret, father-king;
for the father is a rival who has the power to overthrow the father of lies, by raising heirs of holiness.

Many men deny, neglect, or misuse their fatherly kingship.
Many believe the lie that the secret, unknown, hidden father is useless, powerless, and ineffective.
This is a demonic deception.

God calls you to be like St. Joseph; to receive, believe, and obey the angel’s command, “Do not be afraid,” you are a king in Christ who has Christ the King living within.
Do not believe that your kingship and fatherhood is useless, powerless, and ineffective.
Assume your
kingly authority, embrace, and believe that God who lives in you grants you the power to become a godly father who, by your hidden kingship, will raise saints who reveal Christ to the world.

Go to Joseph for Strength

Though we may often feel powerless over life, St. Joseph shows us that we are called to be like him: hidden kings of strength.
But to be strong, we must first confess that we are
weak.
Where do you feel the weakest?
In what areas of your life do you feel powerless?

Today, go to Joseph, your spiritual father, who understood what it felt like to be powerless.
Expose to him your weakness and ask him to help you follow Jesus Christ, the King of Kings, more closely. Joseph is your spiritual mentor and guide, and he will obtain the graces you need.

—St. Joseph, a most hidden father-king, help me follow Christ the King.
