Section 4 | Rule 10: Concerning the Three Sacred Duties of a Husband

According to the holy apostle, the husband has three primary spiritual duties in relationship to his wife: first, he is to deliver himself up for his wife, for the sacred text reads, “Husbands, love your wives as Christ also loved the Church, and delivered Himself up for her” (Eph 5:25). Second, the husband is to assist in his wife’s sanctification, for the scripture says, “Christ loved the Church and delivered Himself up for her: that He might sanctify her, cleansing her by the laver of the water in the word of life” (Eph 5:25-26).  Third, the Custos is to present his wife to God, for the holy apostle says, “That he might present her to Himself, a glorious Church… but that it be holy and without blemish” (Eph 5:27).
