Way of a Man Series | #38

At the moment of Joseph’s betrothal to Mary not only did his marriage begin, but also an adventure that consisted of severe trials, intense hardships, and nearly insurmountable challenges.
From the moment that a man allows another person to occupy the dominion of his heart, it becomes vulnerable, and he risks being sorely tried and severely wounded.
The Sacrament of Marriage is an intense fire that purifies and perfects a man in his efforts to love his wife as Christ loves the Church.
It purifies a man of his selfish tendencies and perfects him in self-giving love.
As St. Joseph allowed Mary into his heart, you have allowed your wife into your heart; and from that moment onward, you have entered the sacred mission of self-giving love.
To grant your wife access to this sacred space indicates that you will be vulnerable to the painful process of purification.
Along with this purification comes the temptation to flee from this holy mission.
However, fulfillment is found in taking responsibility for woman and embracing her, rather than fleeing from her.
Every blessing has its curse, and every curse has its blessing.
For example, Jesus is the greatest blessing that Mary could ever receive.
And yet, the blessing of His life ultimately ended in the curse of the bitter Passion of His death.
By means of your espousal to your wife you will receive some of the greatest blessings, but also endure bitter tests, trials, hardships, and purifications. Your commitment to this process is essential to your holiness—and your family’s sanctification.
Your glory as a father is intrinsically linked to your fidelity as a husband.
To be an image of God the Father you must first be an image of Christ the Son, the Bridegroom who sacrifices Himself for His Bride.
To truly succeed in this holy endeavor, you will need to take Mary as your mother.
St. Joseph encountered tremendous challenges in his relationship with Mary.
We all encounter difficulties in our marriages.
What are the tensions and difficulties in your marriage?
It is here, amidst these complexities, that St. Joseph comes alongside of you, calling you to shoulder up with him in carrying the cross.
Depend on him.
He understands your plight. Press on in your consecration to him.
He will obtain for you the grace to persevere and become a true man of God.
—St. Joseph, faithful husband, pray for us.
